Working towards community empowerment

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation (NPCF) are proud to partner with the Galambila Aboriginal Health Service based on the Mid North Coast in Coffs Harbour.

Galambila has been providing culturally appropriate health services to the Aboriginal community, working towards a healthy and empowered mob for over 23 years.

Galambila aim to deliver services with cultural integrity and sensitivity “by our people, for our people”.

A recent grant of $140,000 has been funded by NPCF for the “Deadly Kids.. Healthy Mob” project which provides an innovative and localised child focused parenting group delivered with cultural integrity and sensitivity through clinical services such as hearing and health checks. It holds a long-term goal of improving school readiness, school attendance and overall health outcomes for future generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

The program will extend on from the clinical services currently provided through Midwives, Registered Nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers and offers a comprehensive, holistic, whole-of-life approach.

Galambila Aboriginal Health Service recently attended a National Aboriginal & Torres Islander Children’s Day event at the Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School, where they provided school children with hearing and vision screenings.

The National Aboriginal & Torres Islander Children’s Day event holds meaningful historical context, as the date 4 August was historically used to communally celebrate the birthdays of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken from their families at a young age, without knowing their birthday – the Stolen Generations.

Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School has a focus on Gumbaynggirr language and culture, quality teaching based on Gumbaynggirr values and philosophies, and strong community and parent engagement. The School is the first bilingual School of an Aboriginal language in NSW and is committed to striving for academic excellence among all students by developing and implementing innovative practices.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation look forward to continuing the partnership with Galambila Aboriginal Health Service and seeing the impacts that this service will have on the local community, now and into the future.
