Celebrate NYE your way

09/12/2019

Avoid the crowds and enjoy New Year’s on your terms with these great ideas.

Crowds. Unrealistic expectations. Sore heads and hip pockets. New Year’s Eve has it all in spades – making it one night of the year that many of us dread.

Here are some simple ideas to consider if you want to buck the trend and celebrate on your own terms instead.

Host a NYE dinner party

Gather your nearest and dearest, throw together some great food or get everyone to bring a plate and watch the fireworks on TV. You’ll have a blast and avoid being stuck in crowds trying to get home after midnight.

Plan a karaoke night

Put together a countdown playlist that includes songs from the year that’s been, plus all your guests’ favourites. You’ll be ringing in the new year by belting out a tune and busting a move… on the living room floor, rather than in a packed, sweaty nightclub. Winning!

Hold a rooftop party

If you live in a building with access to a rooftop, don’t waste it – it’s a great way to soak up the celebratory vibe without actually having to go out. With any luck, you’ll be able to spot some fireworks, enjoy yourself, and then head off to bed when you’re ready without having to wait for transport options.

Movies of 2019 party

Missed a heap of great flicks in the past year? Make New Year’s Eve your night for a catch-up movie marathon – just add a few movie-loving mates, your preferred streaming service and a giant bowl of popcorn.

Invite mates for a sleepover

If you’d prefer to be comfortable at home on the lounge instead of stuck in the city, why not plan a NYE sleepover? As a bonus, this one can also be fun for families with kids who don’t want to battle crowds or drive home. Drag out some mattresses, bring out the board games and spend a night of quality time with your friends or family.

Go on holiday

You’ll need to plan this one early and get a few mates on board, but it’s a great way to escape the NYE craziness and have more of a relaxed experience. Think camping, hiring a house or booking a few days at a resort close to home. If you’ve left it a bit late to make plans, check out accommodation services online to see what’s available, or consider house swapping with friends.

Go where the crowds aren’t

Want to see the fireworks without the hassle of crowds, packed public transport and the need to shell out exorbitant fees for a ticket? Seek out lesser-known or free vantage points that are going to be quieter or just do a quick online search of the best vantage points in your city.

Have a solo spa night

Love a night in? There’s no better time to do it than on New Year’s Eve, when you can use the night to sink into a hot bath, arrange a pamper pack, watch a great movie or read a book. Bliss. The bonus is a New Year’s Day you can actually enjoy feeling fresh and rejuvenated!
