Blood cancer diagnosis upends your world

The Leukaemia Foundation

Monday, 24 September, 2018.

Like many of her peers, Danica was a busy and active teenager; she was achieving high grades at school, she played touch football and netball, was in the Central Coast Academy of Sport for netball umpiring, and was an active member of the Umina Surf Life Saving Club.

As her teens progressed, Danica noticed things weren’t quite right. She regularly felt unwell, couldn’t concentrate, and her body struggled to keep up with her gruelling schedule. After two years of searching for an answer, the devastating diagnosis was confirmed; Danica had stage four Hodgkin lymphoma.

The Leukaemia Foundation $65,000 Young Bloods Program “Getting this diagnosis … it upended my world. At barely 18, I hadn’t really lived my life. It was really shocking to not know if I’d actually get to live my life,” Danica said.

Danica was immediately admitted to undertake six months of intensive chemotherapy treatment which, while life-saving also carried severe side-effects.

“I had a lot of muscle weakness in my legs from sitting for hours having chemotherapy. This was compounded by being unwell in bed and having extended hospital stays. I couldn’t even walk down the driveway. I also had to rebuild my lungs as I really had no lung capacity.

“Young Bloods literally got me back on my feet,” Danica said.

Blood Cancer Support Coordinator for Leukaemia Foundation, Glenda Thomas, said the Young Bloods Program looks after people under 25 years of age with a blood cancer diagnosis. It also helps the siblings of a young person with a blood cancer diagnosis as well as the children of an adult with a blood cancer diagnosis who are struggling.

“It took quite a while for Danica to get her diagnosis. She was so deconditioned, so weak, so underweight. I could see a real value for Danica to use Young Bloods in getting exercise physiology to build her up again and that’s what we were able to provide,” said Glenda.

Through Young Bloods Danica was able to have an exercise physiologist go to her house.

“It was amazing that I was able to have personalised sessions in the way that best suited me and my situation,” Danica said.

According to Glenda, Danica’s exercise physiologist was quite shocked to see how weak and underconditioned she was.

“We were able to provide Danica with 10 sessions with her exercise physiologist. These sessions, they’ve changed her life,” Glenda said.

Danica credits Young Bloods with being able to build up her strength and lung capacity which helped her get back to doing normal life activities.

“With the help of my exercise physiologist I was able to really start to rebuild my life by rebuilding my muscle strength. I felt like I was able to get back on my feet and start to lead a normal life.

“I’ve just started running, which is something that I’ve never been able to properly do, and I’m really enjoying it. I just feel like I have my overall health again and it feels really good,” Danica said.

The 20 year-old has a bright future ahead of her. She’s now a qualified first metaphysical healer and has started her own business.

“I’ve decided to continue studying complementary therapies so I can help people who are not only dealing with cancer but help anyone who needs help at any stage in their life so they can lead their best life,” Danica said.

Young Bloods made a difference to Danica’s life.

DANICA WILLIAMS

I'm Danica Williams, I'm a cancer survivor, a healer, and a business owner.

I had about two years to finally get diagnosed and then when I was 18 years old I was diagnosed with advanced stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma and had six months of chemo therapy.
It really upends your world and especially to be barely 18 and not know the outcome of your life, or having really lived your life, so I think it's really shocking to not know if you'll get to live your life at all.

GLENDA THOMAS

Danica was so de-conditioned, so weak, so under-weight, and basically I could see a real value for using the Young Bloods program in actually getting exercise physiology to build her up again.

The Young Bloods looks after people that are under 25 years of age, that have either got a blood cancer diagnosis, that are a sibling of someone with the blood cancer diagnosis, or a child of an adult with a blood cancer diagnosis, struggling.

We've had a relationship with Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation for a while, and just seeing Danica with the 10 sessions I was able to provide with the grant money from Newcastle Permanent just changed her life.

I think just being able to have personalised help in the best way that suits your situation, both physically, mentally, and just where you're at in your period of treatment is really great.
