Board of Trustees
The Foundation's Board of Trustees will evaluate applications for grants. This Board includes the Chairman of Newcastle Permanent, the Chief Executive Officer of Newcastle Permanent and appointed Board Members.
The Trustees have wide experience in evaluating such proposals. Where specialist knowledge is required, it is sought from suitably qualified experts from that particular field.
Your application for a grant will be assessed on the basis of how the project fits with the Foundation's focus, eligibility criteria and procedural rules.

Michael Slater BCom, MBA, FCPA, FCIS, FAICD, FTIA, FAIM, FCIM
Chairman
Newcastle Permanent Building Society Board Member since August 2002.
Chairman of the Corporate Governance & Nominations Committee. Member of the, Asset & Liability Committee.
Michael is a qualified accountant and has financial and management experience in water and electricity infrastructure industries with expertise in financial and management analysis, commercial and organisational reviews and audits, due diligence and corporate governance.
Michael is also currently Chairman of the Newcastle Friendly Society Limited and the Newcastle Permanent Community Foundation Company Limited, which is the trustee of the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. In addition Michael chairs a clean energy company, Corkys Carbon and Combustion Pty Limited and serves as a director on the Boards of the Hunter Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Limited, Corporate Internet Business Information Systems Pty Ltd and Denis Veitch and Associates Pty Ltd.
Michael has had over 40 years involvement with Surf Lifesaving as well as representing the Hunter Branch as a director on the Helicopter Rescue Service for over 10 years.

Phil Neat MAICD, AFAMI CPM

Phil is a government relations and public affairs adviser and Chairman of a national public affairs group, which provides professional services to a number of corporations, institutions and government agencies. He is also a Director of associated internet solutions and graphic art companies. He had a background in journalism with the ABC and Fairfax before establishing his own consultancy group more than 25 years ago. Phil also serves on the Board of Newcastle Permanent Community Foundation Company Ltd, which is the Trustee of Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. He is active with the Hunter Committee of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, an Associate Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute and was Chairman of the Hunter Committee of the Australian Olympic Team Fund in 2008.

Barrie Lewis AM, FLGMA (RET.)

Chairman of the Audit Committee. Member of the Corporate Governance & Nominations, Asset & Liability and Risk Management Committees.
Barrie is a qualified accountant with over 40 years' experience in commercial and public administration, property development, accountancy and management, having retired as Town Clerk of the City of Newcastle in 1992. He also serves on the Board of Newcastle Friendly Society Ltd and Newcastle Permanent Community Foundation Company Ltd, which is the Trustee of Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. Barrie is presently the Chairman of the Newcastle Lake Macquarie Ex-services Memorial Centre, Director of HGT Australia Ltd, HGT Aust Pty Ltd and a Trustee of the Newcastle Regional Disaster Relief Fund. Barrie is a fellow of the Local Government Managers Australia and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Michael has been the Sport Editor of NBN Television since 1988 and as the Promotions and Marketing Manager since 1992. Through his various roles at NBN Television Mike has served on many committees throughout Northern New South Wales and specifically Newcastle, he is a Board Member of the Central Coast Academy of Sport, served on the 2000 Australian Olympic Committee both in Newcastle and the Central Coast, was on the marketing committee for the 8th Australian Masters Games and has been involved in many community projects.

Samantha is the current Chief Executive Officer at Newcastle University Sport (NUsport) which manages The Forum, the regions’ largest health and fitness facilities. Samantha has strategic planning and leadership experience with expertise in corporate governance, business development, quality and profit improvement, human resource management, change management, research and trend analysis and Commercial Law.
Samantha is involved as a Director of the Hunter Institute Advisory Council (TAFE), Board Member of the Hunter Region Sporting Venues Authority, Member of the CommStrength Board (Youth Suicide Prevention) and Newcastle Lord Mayor’s Community Liaison Reference Group.
Samantha is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Venue Managers Association, Women on Boards, Australian University Sport, Fitness Australia, Hunter Business Chamber, Newcastle Business Club, Newcastle Club, Hunter Business Women’s Network. She is also a former director and member of a number of other community and sporting organisations.
Samantha was awarded the 2002 Telstra Young Business Woman of the Year (NSW), 2002 Hunter Business Chamber Young Business Achiever, 2003 Hunter Business Women’s Network – Woman of Enterprise Award and the Newton-John Award – University of Newcastle 2004.
